Hakkaisan Ropeway, Aerial tramway at Muikamachi Hakkaisan Ski Resort, Japan
The Hakkaisan Ropeway is an aerial tramway at a ski resort in Minamiuonuma, in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. It runs between a base station and a summit station, carrying passengers in a single enclosed cabin across the mountain slope.
The facility first opened in 1983 as a gondola lift serving the ski resort. It was rebuilt and reopened in 2001 as an aerial tramway, which replaced the earlier system with a larger single cabin.
The name Hakkaisan refers to eight rocky peaks that are visible from the cabin during the ride. From the upper station, the Echigo mountain range spreads out in a way that locals have long associated with this part of Niigata.
No physical effort is needed, as passengers simply board and sit for the duration of the ride. Operating hours change depending on the season, so checking in advance helps avoid a wasted trip.
The cabin can carry up to 81 passengers at once, which means large groups travel together without splitting up. This makes it one of the largest single-cabin aerial tramways operating in Japan.
