Shinaki Dam

Shinaki Dam is a gravity dam that spans across the Yasawa River in Gunma Prefecture, controlling water from the surrounding region. The structure works to manage thermal spring water and prevent flooding in the area below.

Construction of Shinaki Dam began in 1961 and was completed in December 1965, marking a period of infrastructure growth in Japan. The dam was part of broader efforts to develop water management systems across the country.

The dam system integrates with the management of Kusatsu Onsen waters, demonstrating Japanese engineering solutions for natural water challenges.

The best time to visit is on clear days when you can see the dam structure and water flow clearly. Access is via local roads that wind through the surrounding valleys.

The structure manages water quality from thermal springs across a catchment area of 30.9 square kilometers, maintaining environmental balance in the region.
