Jōfu Falls

Jōfu Falls, Waterfall in Kusatsu, Japan

Jofu Falls plunges around 40 meters through a deep ravine, creating a dramatic water display along the Osawa River near Kusatsu Onsen. The cascade descends in layers, and mist rises from the base, often shrouding the surrounding rock walls in fog.

The Japanese Ministry of the Environment included this waterfall in its selection of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, ranking it at number 26. This recognition reflects its status as one of the country's most notable natural landmarks.

The waterfall serves as a natural landmark where visitors witness seasonal transformations, particularly in autumn when red and gold foliage frames the cascade. The surrounding landscape changes character throughout the year, creating different moods for those who return.

Access is from the Ovoza parking area via forest paths, with the round trip covering about 3.6 kilometers. Plan for 90 to 120 minutes of walking and wear appropriate footwear, as the trail can be muddy or slippery depending on recent weather.

Natural forces and landslides have repeatedly altered access to the waterfall over time, causing visitors to discover alternate routes through the mountain terrain. This ongoing transformation means that each visit can feel slightly different, revealing how dynamic this landscape truly is.
