Kusatsu, Hot spring resort in Gunma Prefecture, Japan

Kusatsu is a hot spring town in Gunma Prefecture situated at 1,200 meters elevation in the mountains. The center revolves around the Yubatake spring source, which flows with mineral-rich water at temperatures up to 95 degrees Celsius and shapes the town's layout.

In the late 1800s, German physician Erwin von Baelz studied the healing properties of these springs and brought international attention to the town. This recognition helped establish Kusatsu as a destination for visitors seeking therapeutic benefits.

The Yumomi ceremony shows how people cool hot spring water using wooden boards while performers sing and move in sync. This practice is woven into daily life and turns a practical task into a local tradition.

The town is accessible from Tokyo via direct buses and train service to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station, with most locations walkable from there. The mountain elevation and spring areas mean you should bring warmer clothing, especially in cooler months.

The nearby active volcano Mount Shirane contributes sulfuric waters to the Manza Onsen baths located at 1,800 meters elevation. This volcanic connection gives those baths a distinct composition different from the main spring area.
