Shiga Highlands, Mountain ski resort in Yamanouchi, Japan
The Shiga Highlands extend across 4.25 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, featuring 21 interconnected ski fields and 70 lifts at elevations between 1,400 and 2,300 meters.
The area received recognition as a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1980, encompassing 13,000 hectares of protected natural environment within the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park.
The region maintains seven natural hot spring sources that supply numerous traditional Japanese inns, offering visitors the experience of thermal bathing after winter activities.
The ski season operates from mid-November through early May, with free shuttle buses connecting different resorts and hotel areas throughout the highlands.
The Unjō no Yado Yokote Sanchō Hyutte stands at 2,305 meters, making it the highest bakery in Japan, serving fresh bread amid the mountain landscape.
