Yamanouchi, Mountain town in Shimotakai district, Japan

Yamanouchi is a mountain town in Shimotakai district, spanning a large area of forested slopes and valleys in Nagano Prefecture. The landscape rises from lower elevations to high peaks, with settlements scattered across the terrain and hot springs emerging from the ground in several locations.

The town took its current form in 1955 when Hirao merged with the neighboring villages of Honami and Yomase. Archaeological evidence shows the area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era, with pottery and burial mounds indicating continuous settlement over millennia.

The name Yamanouchi translates to "mountain interior," reflecting the region's rugged terrain and isolated character. Walking through the scattered villages, you notice how local life adapts to steep slopes and mountain valleys, with buildings nestled into the landscape.

Getting around requires using local buses and the railway line that connects the scattered communities. Wear good hiking boots, as most routes involve steep terrain and mountain paths, especially if you plan to explore the remote villages or natural areas.

The Jigokudani Monkey Park is located here, where Japanese macaques soak in natural hot springs surrounded by snow during winter months. This unusual wildlife spectacle remains one of the few places in the world where wild primates habitually use geothermal water.
