Shimotsuma Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Shimotsuma, Japan
The fortress extended 1.5 kilometers from north to south, protected by seven layers of moats and earthen walls on its northern side.
Built in 1455 by the Tagaya clan, the castle served as a strategic stronghold until its confiscation following the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600.
The castle town developed around the Gozutenno shrine, now known as Shimotsuma Shrine, which became a center for merchants and samurai residences.
Located three minutes on foot from Shimotsuma Station on the Kanto Railway Joso Line, the castle site now functions as Tagaya Castle Ruins Park.
The castle incorporated the natural defenses of two rivers, the Kokai and Kinu, along with marshlands to the south for strategic protection.
