Ōmidō, Buddhist temple in Tsukuba, Japan
Ōmidō is a Buddhist temple situated at the base of Mount Tsukuba that houses a thousand-armed Kannon statue in its main prayer hall. The temple grounds feature a reception area and parking facilities, with a modern layout designed for visitor access.
The temple was established in 782 and became part of a pilgrimage route featuring thirty-three Kannon temples across the region. Over time it developed into an important religious site for local worshippers.
The temple maintains traditional Buddhist ceremonies throughout the year and serves as a branch temple of Gokokuji, the head temple of Buzan-ha Shingon Buddhism.
The temple is reachable on foot from Tsukuba Mountain Shrine and offers ample parking for visitors. It is helpful to wear comfortable shoes as the grounds sit on a gently sloped hillside.
During the Edo period the temple held ties to the Tokugawa shogunate and maintained a branch location in the capital. This connection to ruling authority gave it special importance among the political elite of that era.
