Makabe Denshokan, Public cultural center in Makabe, Sakuragawa, Japan.
Makabe Denshokan is a public cultural center in Sakuragawa that combines modern architecture with large glass windows allowing natural light into exhibition spaces. The building houses permanent displays about local history along with a library section for the community.
The center opened in 2011 as the result of an architectural design by Design Organization ADH. This project shaped a new approach to public spaces in the Ibaraki region.
The facility displays objects and documents that tell stories about the Makabe region and how people here have lived over time. Walking through, visitors see items that belong to the local community and reflect what matters to residents.
The building is open daily and offers permanent exhibitions, workshops, and reading areas. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the displays and library spaces at a comfortable pace.
The building received several prestigious architecture awards, including the AIJ Prize and the Good Design Award. These recognitions honored its innovative approach to creating public space for the community.
