Sakuragawa, City in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan

Sakuragawa is a city in Ibaraki Prefecture featuring mountainous terrain along its eastern border and the Sakuragawa River running through its landscape. The city encompasses several districts with distinct characteristics: while Makabe is known for its historic old town, the surrounding areas contain farmland, forests, and residential zones.

The city came into being in 2005 when three former towns and villages merged into a single administrative entity, combining their populations and territories. This consolidation allowed for better management of the region while preserving the distinct local identities of each former area.

The Makabe district preserves traditional buildings arranged according to 17th-century urban planning principles, showcasing local craftsmanship and architectural styles from that era. Annual festivals held here celebrate local customs and bring the community together around shared heritage.

The city is accessible by various transportation options, with its location in Ibaraki providing good connections to regional networks. Visitors should allow time to explore the different districts, as each has its own character and points of interest.

The Amabikisan Rakuho Temple has stood for more than 1,000 years and features peacocks roaming freely across its grounds among the sacred structures. This unusual blend of a religious site with wandering wildlife creates an atmosphere visitors rarely encounter elsewhere.
