Ogyū Castle

Ogyū Castle is a mountain fortress in Toyota with central and secondary compounds positioned on elevated ground. The site contains stone walls, defensive gates, and a series of platforms that demonstrate the standard layout of medieval Japanese fortifications.

A local leader built the fortress on this mountain in the early 1500s. It was later abandoned when regional power shifted following a major change in the ruling structure of the area.

This place served as the seat of a regional clan and still bears traces of their authority today. Visitors can see how the layout reflected the power and organization of the Matsudaira family.

The site is easy to explore on foot since paths connect the different areas. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the terrain is uneven and slopes steeply in places.

The grounds contain an underground water system that stored rainwater and well water to supply the residents. This clever design reveals how thoughtfully the defense and facilities of this mountain installation were planned.
