Kōgetsu-in

Kōgetsu-in is a Buddhist temple in Okazaki featuring traditional wooden structures with sliding doors and screen paintings by artist Reizei Tamechika. A two-story pagoda stands within the grounds and completes the architectural composition.

The temple was founded in 1475 by Matsudaira Chikatada as a memorial for fallen Matsudaira soldiers. The site contains graves of eight generations of the Matsudaira family.

The temple preserves Buddhist memorial tablets connected to the Tokugawa family and houses a wooden statue of Tokugawa Ieyasu. These objects show how the place links to the history of Japanese leadership.

The temple is located about three kilometers from Okazaki Castle and is open daily for visitors. A visit here pairs well with nearby attractions in the surrounding area.

The temple grounds feature a specific architectural design that creates an unobstructed view through multiple gates toward Okazaki Castle. This purposefully aligned sightline connects the site visually to the castle and establishes a special spatial relationship.
