Mount Hoshigajō, Mountain summit in Shodoshima, Japan.

Mount Hoshigajō rises on Shodoshima, the second largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, with hiking trails crossing forested slopes and open viewpoints. The paths connect different parts of the island and pass through areas with olive groves and production facilities.

The mountain stands on Shodoshima, where Japan established its first olive plantation in the early 1900s as part of agricultural reform. This change transformed both the appearance and economy of the island.

Buddhist temples near the mountain contain cave sanctuaries where monks practiced meditation, accessed by climbing chains fixed to steep rock walls. These sites reveal the spiritual importance the area has held for local communities over centuries.

Hiking trails begin from various locations on the island, particularly in the southern region, marked with signs to guide you upward. A rental car is helpful for reaching different trailheads, especially if you want to explore multiple routes.

From the summit you see a Mediterranean-looking landscape where olive trees grow beside soy sauce production facilities. This surprising mix of Southern European crops and Japanese food production gives the island its distinctive character.
