Kankakei, Canyon in Shodoshima, Japan
The Kankakei Gorge extends over 7 kilometers east to west and 4 kilometers north to south, featuring steep cliffs and unusual rock formations.
The site, mentioned in the Nihon Shoki chronicles, received its current name from Fujisawa Nangaku during the early Meiji period and gained national recognition in 1923.
The gorge appears in numerous Japanese literary works and served as a filming location for notable productions including Kiki's Delivery Service.
The Kankakei Ropeway connects the base to the summit in five minutes, offering access to viewing platforms, restaurants, and souvenir shops.
The canyon walls contain volcanic tuff breccia deposits formed 13 million years ago, creating distinct geological patterns through tectonic movements.
