Shoukoku-ji

Shoukoku-ji is a Buddhist temple nestled in the mountains of Katsuura, with multiple halls, pagodas, and landscaped gardens spread across its grounds. The buildings display traditional Japanese architecture featuring dark wood and sliding doors, while gardens are composed of stones, moss, and carefully placed trees.

The temple was founded during the Kamakura period and ranks among the older religious sites in the region. Over centuries, it developed into a significant center for Zen Buddhism and scholarly learning.

The temple remains an active place where monks conduct daily meditation and ceremonies that visitors can quietly observe. Its spaces and gardens follow Zen principles, visible in their spare, uncluttered design.

Visitors can explore the temple during daylight hours, with information boards at various spots explaining details about the buildings and their significance. Comfortable shoes are advisable since the grounds are hilly and multiple sets of steps connect the different halls.

A dragon painting on the ceiling of the main hall creates particular sound effects when visitors clap their hands beneath it. This acoustic quality was intentionally designed to draw attention to the craftsmanship and spatial awareness found in traditional Japanese architecture.
