木曽川橋梁, Railway bridge in Kisogawa, Japan
The Kisogawa Railway Bridge spans approximately 480 meters across the Kiso River and connects Ichinomiya City in Aichi Prefecture with Kasamatsu Town in Gifu Prefecture. The bridge carries two railway tracks and follows a curved path over the water.
Construction began in October 1931 under Konoike Construction and was completed by late 1934. Once finished, it enabled direct train service to connect Nagoya and Gifu.
This railway structure shows the engineering skill of early Showa period Japan and shapes the landscape between two prefectures. Visitors can see the seven truss spans with their distinctive vertical supports from viewpoints along the river.
Visitors can best view the bridge from riverside viewpoints, especially during clear weather. The best time is during daytime hours when trains regularly cross and you can see the structure in full light.
The bridge sits at the narrowest point of the Kiso River and is about 100 meters shorter than the upstream JR Tokaido Main Line bridge. This location shows how engineers made efficient use of the available space.
