Itabashi, Historic bridge in Itabashi-ku, Tokyo, Japan.
Itabashi Bridge crosses the Shakujii River and connects different parts of the district with a modern concrete structure. The current construction stands at a point where historic travel routes once intersected.
A wooden bridge from the Edo period originally stood here and served as a key crossing along the Nakasendo road. The current concrete structure was built in 1972 to replace it while maintaining the continuity of this important passage.
The name means 'plank bridge' and shaped how the entire Itabashi district got its identity, with the crossing point becoming central to the neighborhood's character.
The crossing is reachable on foot from nearby subway stations within a short walk. Access is free and available at any time, making it easy to include in a local exploration of the neighborhood.
The crossing was a crucial stop for travelers and merchants moving between major trading centers during Japan's feudal period. Its location made it one of the most recognized meeting points on the country's main commercial highway.
