Lake Biwa Museum

The Lake Biwa Museum contains multiple exhibition zones focusing on freshwater life, regional nature, and environmental education through interactive displays and living specimens.

Established in 1996, the museum complex features a traditional wooden Maruko-bune boat and a preserved 1964 private residence from the Tomie family of Hikone City.

The museum demonstrates regional fishing methods, cooking techniques, and tools that reflect centuries of human interaction with Lake Biwa's aquatic resources.

Located 25 minutes from JR Kusatsu Station by bus, the museum operates from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM with final admission at 4:00 PM.

The facility maintains a 500,000-liter tunnel tank and a specialized Fish Conservation Center dedicated to protecting 40 endangered species native to Lake Biwa.
