Shōren-ji, Buddhist temple in Takayama, Japan
The Shōren-ji temple complex encompasses several wooden buildings, traditional gardens, and ceremonial halls within the central district of Takayama.
Founded in 1253 by Buddhist monk Zensjun Kanenbo, the temple moved to its current location following orders from local feudal lord Kanamori Nagachika.
The temple maintains daily rituals and ceremonies following Jodo Shinshu Buddhist practices, with morning services starting before sunrise throughout the year.
The temple operates from 5:50 AM to 5:30 PM between March and October, shifting to 6:20 AM to 4:30 PM from November through February.
Following a fire in 1955 that destroyed the original structures, the entire temple complex underwent complete reconstruction, completed in 1964.
