Miyagawa Morning Market, Morning market along Miyagawa River, Takayama, Japan.
Miyagawa Morning Market is a morning market set along the banks of the Miyagawa River in central Takayama, Japan. Stalls line both sides of the area, with riverside vendors focusing on fresh and pickled produce and the shops on the opposite side carrying sweets and crafted goods.
The market started over 200 years ago when local farmers came to sell their harvest directly to people living in town. As time passed, craftspeople joined them, and what had been a produce market grew to include handmade goods as well.
Farmers from the surrounding mountain villages sell alpine vegetables and pickled goods made following old local recipes. The red sarubobo dolls sold here are a craft from the Hida region, and visitors can often buy them directly from the people who make them.
The market runs every morning and closes around midday, so arriving early gives you the best choice of goods. It sits within easy walking distance of central Takayama, and the riverbank makes it straightforward to find and navigate.
Some of the shops on the street side of the market stay open beyond the usual closing time, which blurs the line between the market itself and the regular commercial street. Visitors often only notice this shift as they walk further along and realize the market has quietly given way to ordinary storefronts.
