Kannabe Highlands

The Kannabe Highlands are a highland area in Toyooka rising to about 470 meters, featuring three ski areas and numerous hiking trails throughout the region. The terrain is shaped by volcanic rock formations and broad-leaved forests that cover the slopes.

Mount Kannabe at the center of this area experienced volcanic activity around 25,000 years ago, shaping the landscape through lava flows that remain visible today. This ancient eruption created the geological features that define the highlands.

Local farming practices shape the landscape here, with growers using the mineral-rich volcanic soil to cultivate specialty vegetables that reflect regional food traditions. The agricultural rhythm visible across the fields shows how people have adapted to this terrain over generations.

The easiest way to reach this area is through JR Ebara Station, where a shuttle bus service connects to various points throughout the region. The bus system provides regular service to all major access points for both hikers and skiers.

The area contains waterfalls and springs formed by its volcanic past, enriching the landscape of the northern Kinki region in ways most visitors overlook. These water sources emerged from the same geological forces that shaped the entire highland.
