Toyooka, Urban center in northern Hyogo Prefecture, Japan
Toyooka is a town in northern Hyogo Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast with the Maruyama River flowing through the plain. Mountains frame the surroundings and carry snow in winter, while rice paddies and wetlands mark the flat areas.
The settlement was the seat of Tajima provincial government in the 8th century and developed over centuries as a regional center. An earthquake destroyed large parts of the built-up area in 1925 and forced reconstruction with new structures.
The handbag industry shapes the townscape with numerous workshops and shops producing and selling leather and fabric goods. Visitors often see craftspeople working at sewing machines and can view finished bags in many stores along the streets.
The railway line connects the town to larger cities like Kyoto and Osaka, with trains running several times daily. Cycling is possible on flat roads, while mountain slopes are suitable for walks in the surrounding area.
A program to preserve the Oriental White Stork has reintroduced the species after its disappearance, and birds now nest in wetlands near the town. Observation stations allow visitors to see the storks without disturbing them.
