Onsen-ji, Buddhist temple in Toyooka, Japan.
Onsen-ji is a Buddhist temple built in traditional Setchūyō style, positioned against a mountainside near the hot springs of Kinosaki. The main hall exhibits the architectural details typical of this period and holds the status of an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The temple was founded in 738 and gained prominence after a priest named Douchi Shonin discovered the natural hot springs in the surrounding area. This discovery linked the temple directly to the development of Kinosaki as a destination for bathing.
The temple holds deep roots in the community as a spiritual center tied to the discovery and use of the local hot springs. Visitors today can sense how the site bridges religious practice with the natural resources that shaped the area.
The grounds are accessible by a short walk from Kinosaki Onsen or by ropeway for easier access to the main hall. Choose the walking or cable car route based on your preference and physical condition on the day.
Before modern times, visitors had to pray at this temple and receive permission before they could access the seven public bathhouses of Kinosaki. This practice reveals how closely religion was woven into the daily life of the community.
