Kobe Bridge, Double-decker steel arch bridge in Chūō-ku, Japan
Kobe Bridge is a double-decker steel arch bridge in Chūō-ku connecting mainland Kobe with Port Island. The upper and lower decks serve traffic moving in opposite directions, with pedestrian paths running along both sides.
This structure opened in 1970 as Japan's first double-deck arch bridge, built to link the newly developed Port Island with central Kobe. The design solved the challenge of handling increased traffic without expanding the footprint.
The bridge is a recognizable landmark in the harbor area, and locals often use it as a meeting point when describing directions in the port district.
Cross the bridge during daylight or early evening to enjoy clear views of the harbor and surrounding cityscape. The pedestrian paths are wide and clearly marked on both sides of the structure.
The red steel structure glows with LED lighting from sunset until 23:30, creating reflections across the harbor. This illumination was added in 2013 during major renovation work.
