Kobe Asahi Building, Office skyscraper in Naniwa-machi, Japan
The Kobe Asahi Building is a 25-story office tower in Naniwa-machi, a central district of Kobe, Japan. It rises above a restored historic base that features terracotta-colored stone walls, classical columns, and arched openings, while the upper floors are clad in glass.
The building opened in 1994, preserving the outer shell of the former Kobe Stock Exchange, which dated from 1934. Keeping that original facade was part of a broader approach in the city at the time to retain historic streetscapes rather than replace them entirely.
The name refers to the Asahi newspaper, which was once active in this part of Kobe. Walking past the building, you can see how the classical stone facade at street level gives the block a very different feel from the glass towers nearby.
The ground floor entrance is easy to find from the street and leads directly to the lobby, where signs point to the cinema and restaurants. Visiting on a weekday gives you a calmer experience, as the building is mainly used by office workers.
Although the building looks like one continuous structure from the outside, the historic base and the modern tower above it were built as two independent structures. The technique of erecting a new frame over an old shell without altering it was relatively rare in Japan at the time of construction.
