Katsurao Castle, Mountain fortress in Sakaki, Japan.
Katsurao Castle sits on a strategic hilltop position, featuring multiple defensive trenches, earthen walls, and stone foundations overlooking the Chikuma River valley.
The castle served as the stronghold of the Murakami clan until 1553, when Lord Yoshikiyo Murakami abandoned it during Takeda Shingen's northern campaign.
The castle grounds contain the Mansenji Temple, established in 1582 by Kuniyo Murakami, preserving the legacy of the ruling family through generations.
Visitors can access the castle ruins through a hiking trail starting from Sakaki Shrine, reaching the summit area after a 55-minute uphill walk.
From the main bailey, observers can view both the Japanese Alps and the exact territories the Murakami clan controlled in Chikuma, Nagano, Sakaki, and Ueda.
