Katsurao Castle, Mountain fortress in Sakaki, Japan.

Katsurao Castle is a mountain fortress in Sakaki positioned on a strategic hilltop overlooking the Chikuma River valley. The ruins display multiple defensive trenches, earthen walls, and stone foundations that reveal its former military importance.

The castle served as the stronghold of the Murakami clan until 1553, when Lord Yoshikiyo Murakami abandoned it during Takeda Shingen's military campaign. This withdrawal marked the end of the clan's independent rule over the region.

The Mansenji Temple on the grounds reflects how the ruling family expressed authority through religious institutions. Visitors can still sense the connection between worldly power and spiritual life in this place.

Access to the castle ruins is through a hiking trail that begins from a nearby shrine and leads to the summit area. The route is often steep, so comfortable hiking shoes and adequate time are recommended.

From the main bailey, visitors can see both the Japanese Alps and the former territories of the Murakami clan that stretched across nearby cities. This view reveals why this hilltop was so valuable for defense and control.
