赤芝峡

赤芝峡, River gorge in Oguni, Japan

Akashiba Gorge is a deep valley carved along the Arakawa River with sheer rock walls on both sides and dense forest covering the slopes. The terrain offers several marked hiking trails that wind through the mountainous area and provide different views of the gorge from various points.

The gorge formed over millions of years through the continuous erosion of the Arakawa River, which carved deep passages into the bedrock. This geological process shaped the current rock formations and continues to influence how the region appears today.

The name refers to the red rock formations that define the gorge and are visible from multiple vantage points along the trails. Visitors can observe these geological features directly while walking and understand how the terrain shapes the surrounding landscape.

The site is accessible via a parking area with available spaces and basic facilities on the grounds. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear and avoid visiting during or after rain, as the trails can become slippery in wet conditions.

From October through November, the maple trees, beeches, and cherry trees turn brilliant shades of red and gold, drawing visitors to see this natural seasonal display. This colorful transformation lasts for only a few weeks and attracts many people seeking to witness this natural spectacle.
