Nogeyama Park, Urban park in Oimatsuchō, Nishi-ku, Yokohama, Japan.
Nogeyama Park is an urban park set on a hillside in Oimatsuchō, in the Nishi-ku district of Yokohama, Japan. It covers a wide area with walking paths across different levels, a zoo, an open-air theater, a radio tower with a viewing platform, and several spots that look out over the city and harbor.
The park was created after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 as part of Yokohama's recovery, and opened to the public in 1926. It was designed to give the city's residents a green space in an area that had been severely damaged.
Nogeyama Park is well known in spring, when cherry blossoms draw people from across the city to sit under the trees and share food with friends or family. This tradition, known in Japanese as hanami, turns the park into a lively gathering place for a few weeks each year.
The park sits on a hill, so sturdy shoes are a good idea since some paths involve noticeable climbs. There are also flatter routes for those who prefer a more relaxed walk, and benches are placed along the way.
The zoo inside the park became only the second place in the world to breed Andean condors in captivity, a rare achievement for a city zoo. Visitors can still see these birds there today, which sets this park apart from many others.
