久遠寺

Kuon-ji is a Buddhist temple in Minami-ku featuring traditional Japanese architecture with curved roofs, wooden structures, and ornate decorative details throughout. The complex consists of multiple buildings arranged around courtyards, with elevated prayer halls and a prominent multi-tiered pagoda at its center.

The temple was founded in 1281 and became the principal seat of Nichiren Buddhism in Japan. This establishment marked a turning point in Japanese religious history and solidified its role as the spiritual center of this Buddhist school.

The temple serves as a center for Nichiren Buddhist practice, where visitors encounter daily prayers and ceremonies that shape the spiritual experience. People come to participate in rituals that have been passed down through generations.

The grounds are accessible daily with adjusted opening hours depending on the season, opening earlier during warmer months and with shorter hours from fall onward. Early morning visits are best for experiencing ceremonies and avoiding crowds.

The grounds contain the mausoleum of Nichiren, the founder of the school, making it one of the holiest sites in Nichiren Buddhism. This sacred burial place draws pilgrims who honor the founder and continue his teachings.
