Kanaizawa Stele

The Kanaizawa Stele stands 110 centimeters tall, crafted from andesite stone with 112 vertical characters inscribed on its surface in the year 726.

The monument records the names of nine individuals from the Mika clan, including women who held significant positions within the family administrative structure.

As part of the Three Stelae of Kozuke, this monument contains the earliest written instance of 'Gunma' in the region, marking the origin of the prefecture's name.

Located at coordinates 36.285672, 139.016158, the stele received UNESCO Memory of the World registration in 2017 and holds Special Historic Site status in Japan.

The inscription details family relationships through female lineage, indicating the substantial role of women in household management during the Nara period.
