Kanaizawa Stele

This stele is an andesite stone monument standing in Takasaki with ancient script carved into its surface. The inscribed surface records information from the early medieval period and forms part of a significant group of similar monuments in the area.

This stele was created in the early 8th century and documents life during that period. It reveals how families and local administration were structured in those times.

This stele is one of three ancient monuments in the region and contains the oldest written mention of the name Gunma in these parts. The inscriptions record family members, particularly showing how women held important roles in managing household affairs.
