Akigase Bridge, Road bridge in Sakura-ku, Japan
Akigase Bridge spans the Arakawa River and a drainage channel, linking Sakura Ward with Shiki City through a modern steel structure. It functions as a key transportation link between the two areas with a separate pedestrian walkway positioned on the upstream side.
The original structure was built in 1908 as a wooden submersible bridge and underwent major renovation in 1938 before the current steel version opened in 1982. This progression reflects the gradual modernization of transportation infrastructure in the region.
The bridge connects to areas featuring the Sakurasou Park and the Tajima-ga-hara Primrose Colony, designated as a Special Natural Monument of Japan.
The bridge can be accessed as a crossing between Sakura Ward and Shiki, with the dedicated pedestrian pathway offering a safe passage. The best time to visit is during dry weather, as while the bridge remains passable during floods, pedestrian access may be limited at those times.
The bridge features adjustable railing sections at its embankment intersections that can be modified during high water periods. This engineering solution allows the structure to adapt to changing water levels while maintaining its overall stability.
