Arts Maebashi

Arts Maebashi occupies a renovated building with a distinctive punched metal exterior and soaring exhibition spaces created by architect Sakakura Associates. The interior design allows for flexible presentation of contemporary art across multiple gallery levels.

This museum was established in 2013 within a former department store and gained official museum status in 2015. The conversion marks a shift in how the building serves the city and its residents.

This institution shows contemporary art with a focus on Southeast Asian artists and maintains active partnerships with local schools. Visitors can see how the gallery brings together international perspectives and community engagement through its exhibition programs.

The museum sits about 10 minutes walk from Maebashi Station and operates daily from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM except Wednesdays. A museum shop and café are open to visitors without requiring paid admission.

The building earned the Good Design Award for transforming a low-ceiling retail space into expansive galleries with modern presentation capabilities. This architectural solution demonstrates how commercial properties can successfully serve cultural purposes.
