Castello Pandone

Castello Pandone, Medieval castle in Venafro, Italy

Castello Pandone is a fortified structure in Venafro with three circular towers positioned at the northern, western, and southern corners. Today it houses the National Museum of Molise, which displays regional historical collections and artifacts.

The Pandone family built the fortress in the 15th century, but an earlier structure was heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1349. The reconstruction that followed shaped the building as it stands today.

The museum inside displays religious artworks collected from regional churches, including alabaster pieces and painted walls that reflect local artistic traditions. These collections show how art and faith were intertwined in medieval times.

The museum offers guided tours throughout the week and provides information panels in multiple languages. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the various exhibition spaces inside.

The private quarters of Count Enrico Pandone still display 16th-century frescoes showing life-sized portraits of his favorite horses. These unusual artworks reveal the personal interests and wealth of the noble family.
