Venafrum amphitheatre, Roman amphitheatre ruins in Venafro, Italy

The amphithéâtre de Venafrum is an ancient Roman amphitheatre in the center of Venafro, a small town in the Molise region of southern Italy. Its oval outline is still readable in the urban fabric, with scattered sections of original masonry surviving between later buildings.

The amphitheatre was built in the 1st century AD, when Venafro was a prosperous city under Roman rule. After a major earthquake in 346 AD weakened the town, the structure fell out of use and its stones were gradually taken to build houses and farms in later centuries.

The curve of the ancient structure is still visible in the street layout of Venafro today, where the roads follow the old seating tiers. Walking through the neighborhood, you can spot old stone blocks embedded directly into the walls of later houses.

The ruins are close to Venafro's train station and easy to reach on foot from the town center. The site is an open area with no facilities, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water, especially in warm weather.

The nearby archaeological museum of Venafro holds a copy of the ancient amphitheatre's rulebook, a stone inscription listing the conduct expected from spectators. Such documents are rarely preserved and offer an unusually direct view of how the audience was managed during events.
