竜禅寺

Ryuzenji is a Buddhist temple in Toride with several buildings including a main hall, the Sanbutsudo hall, and a bell tower, all featuring traditional architecture and some with thatched roofs. The grounds include open spaces and quiet areas that create a simple setting for prayer and reflection.

The temple was established in 924 by Denyo, a figure whose name is recorded in local history. It underwent significant restoration in 1192 when leaders of the time saw the need to rebuild it after a long period of decline.

The Sanbutsudo hall contains three Buddha statues carved from a single piece of wood, each representing different aspects of Buddhist belief. You can see how much skill went into creating these spiritual works from centuries ago.

You can walk around the temple grounds freely at no cost, with paths connecting the different buildings and open areas. To see inside the structures, arrange a visit in advance rather than expecting to simply step inside on arrival.

The Sanbutsudo hall features covered corridors on three sides, a rare architectural choice that few structures in Japan share. This design shows how builders found creative ways to shelter visitors from the weather while maintaining traditional forms.
