Koyama Himon, Historical brick bridge in Matsudo, Japan

Koyama Himon is a brick structure that crosses the Sakagawa River while carrying Chiba Prefectural Road Route 5. The construction measures 8.54 meters long and 3 meters wide, serving simultaneously as a road bridge and a water control gate.

The structure was designed and built by architect Fujisaku Ueda in 1898 during Japan's period of rapid industrial growth. It represents an era when European building materials and engineering techniques were introduced into Japanese infrastructure projects.

The structure carries a name that reflects its role as both a passage and water control point in the local landscape. Today you can observe how the design serves dual purposes for the community.

The site is easily accessible if you use Chiba Prefectural Road Route 5 or explore the surrounding area. You can view the structure from various vantage points, especially from the banks of the Sakagawa River.

The structure follows a spectacles bridge design with two openings arranged symmetrically beneath the road surface. This architectural detail is rarely noticed by those who only view the top of the bridge.
