Oya Rare-shaped Rock, Natural rock formation in Utsunomiya, Japan
Rock formations of green tuff rise across farmland near Oya Temple, creating distinct shapes against the rural landscape of Tochigi Prefecture.
The Oya stone formations emerged from submarine volcanic deposits approximately 24 million years ago, forming deposits reaching 300 meters in thickness.
The rocks gained recognition through travel writings, woodblock prints, and haiku poetry during the late Edo period and modern era.
Visitors can observe the rock formations from Oya Scenic Park, which provides viewing platforms and walking paths for optimal observation.
During spring rice planting season, water-filled paddies create reflections that make the rocks appear to rise from a water surface.
