桂林寺

Keirin-ji is a Buddhist temple in Utsunomiya featuring a large seated Buddha statue near the inner gate, positioned on a lotus flower with careful sculptural detail. The main worship hall contains intricate wooden architecture and multiple structures arranged around a central courtyard.

The temple was established during the early Edo period and developed into a significant Buddhist site for the region. Over the centuries, various structures were added and restored, gradually shaping the architectural character visible today.

The hall features carved dragons on wooden beams beneath the eaves, following traditional Japanese Buddhist design. These ornaments appear throughout the structure and create a consistent visual language across the temple grounds.

The site is within walking distance from JR Utsunomiya Station, making it accessible for those using public transportation. The grounds are relatively easy to navigate, though some areas require climbing stairs and sturdy footwear is recommended.

A monumental grave marker at the cemetery entrance houses multiple Buddhist figures placed in small stone alcoves and engravings. This memorial displays elaborate carving work that visitors often overlook despite it being a significant part of the grounds.
