Utsunomiya Fairy Museum, Art museum in Utsunomiya, Japan.
The Utsunomiya Fairy Museum is an art museum on the fifth floor of Omotesando Square in Utsunomiya, Japan, dedicated to works centered on fairy themes. The collection brings together ceramics, paintings, and stained glass pieces made by a range of artists.
The museum opened in July 2007 after artist Kimie Imura donated her collection of fairy-related objects and artworks to establish this space. Her donation laid the foundation for a permanent home dedicated to this theme.
The museum shows how fairy themes are interpreted by artists from Japan and abroad, making it possible to compare very different visual approaches in one place. Walking through the rooms, visitors can see how the same subject takes on different shapes depending on the medium and the artist's background.
The museum sits inside a shopping center and can be reached by elevator, which makes it easy to access for most visitors. The gallery spaces are compact, so a visit of an hour or two is generally enough to see everything at a comfortable pace.
The collection includes works connected to Oscar Wilde and to British illustrator Cicely Mary Barker, best known for her flower fairy drawings, bringing a European thread into this Japanese setting. It is rare to find this kind of European illustration tradition displayed alongside Japanese art in a regional museum.
