Eikyū-ji

Eikyū-ji, Buddhist temple in Taito ward, Tokyo, Japan

Eikyū-ji is a Buddhist temple in Taitō featuring traditional Japanese architecture with a main hall, ornamental wooden carvings, and stone lanterns. The grounds contain various Buddhist statues and smaller shrine structures arranged throughout its modest but thoughtfully designed layout.

Founded during the Northern and Southern Courts period, the temple experienced several shifts in its religious direction before becoming a Tendai Buddhist institution. These changes reflected the broader transformations of Buddhism in the region over centuries.

The temple remains a place where local residents come to offer prayers and pay respects to Mokaki Fudo. Its status as one of five Fudo temples linked to Edo history makes it part of a wider spiritual network still observed by nearby communities.

The temple is just one minute from Exit 3 of Minowa Station on the Hibiya Line, making it easily accessible by train. Visitors can explore the halls and grounds at their own pace throughout the day without time constraints.

The temple's name comes from Yamano Eikyu, an official who rebuilt it as a place to pray for executed prisoners. This compassionate origin gives the site a deeper meaning connected to justice and remembrance in Edo-period society.
