Farm Tomita, Flower farm in Nakafurano, Hokkaido, Japan

Farm Tomita is a flower farm in Nakafurano, Hokkaido, known above all for its lavender fields that cover gentle hills. The property holds 12 separate flower fields growing around 80 varieties, along with shops, a distillery, and a memorial room dedicated to the farm's founder.

The farm was founded by Tadao Tomita, who began growing lavender to supply the domestic perfume industry. When that industry turned to cheaper imports, tourism saved the fields from being abandoned.

Farm Tomita helped turn lavender into a symbol of Hokkaido for people across Japan and beyond. Visitors today can enter a Scent Experience Room inside the Hanabito House, where different lavender oils can be compared side by side.

The farm is about a 5-minute drive from Nakafurano Station, or a 25-minute walk from the bus stop there. A large parking area is available for those arriving by car, and the farm is open from morning to late afternoon, with hours that vary by season.

During the lavender season, a slow tourist train called Norokko-go stops at a temporary station right next to the farm. The train has an old-fashioned open design and runs slowly enough to let passengers look out over the fields.
