Sugisawadai Site, Archaeological site in Noshiro, Japan

The Sugisawadai Site extends over 35,000 square meters on the north side of Shinonome Plateau, situated at an altitude of 35 meters near the Sea of Japan.

Archaeological excavations at the site revealed foundations of 44 pit dwellings and 109 flask-shaped storage pits dating back to the first half of the Jomon period.

The discovery of a polished stone ax made from materials found only in Hokkaido demonstrates early trade networks between different regions of prehistoric Japan.

Visitors can reach the Sugisawadai Site by taking a 30-minute walk from Kita-Noshiro Station on the JR East Gono Line.

Four large oval longhouse-style dwellings, measuring up to 31 meters in length, were uncovered at the site, indicating sophisticated architectural practices of ancient inhabitants.
