Sugisawadai Site

Sugisawadai Site is an archaeological excavation on Shinonome Plateau, containing the remains of ancient dwellings and storage areas from the early Jomon period. The site sits on elevated ground near the coast, where people once settled and stored food long ago.

The site dates to the early Jomon period, showing how people lived in this region thousands of years ago. Archaeological findings point to a settled community that had developed methods for housing and food storage.

The discovery of a polished stone ax made from materials found only in Hokkaido demonstrates early trade networks between different regions of prehistoric Japan.

The area sits on elevated ground with open views of the surroundings. Visitors should bring sturdy shoes and weather protection, as the site remains fully exposed.

Large oval dwellings were uncovered among the remains, notably bigger than typical houses of that era. These structures suggest residents had advanced building skills and possibly social organization.
