池の平, Mountain pond in Aichi Prefecture, Japan
Ike no Taira is a mountain pond in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, set among birch trees and alpine vegetation at roughly 1,400 meters (about 4,600 feet) above sea level. The pond is fed by the surrounding slopes and sits in an open natural bowl that allows wide views of the mountain terrain nearby.
The pond was used as a water source by communities in the surrounding mountain area for a long time before hikers began arriving regularly. It became a known destination as mountain walking grew popular in Japan during the latter part of the 20th century.
The pond serves as a central point for local festivals throughout the year, where residents perform traditional ceremonies honoring the mountain spirits.
The pond is reached by marked hiking trails that start from parking areas near the trailhead, so it is best visited on foot. Mountain weather can change fast at this elevation, so bringing an extra layer of clothing is a good idea regardless of the season.
The pond freezes over completely in winter, forming a flat sheet of ice that reflects the surrounding trees and sky. This makes it a draw for photographers during the colder months, when the rest of the trail is largely empty.
