Sakuma Dam, Gravity dam in Tenryu Ward, Japan
The Sakuma Dam spans the Tenryu River with a height of 155.5 meters and a length of 293.5 meters, forming an artificial lake between Shizuoka and Aichi prefectures.
Construction of the Sakuma Dam began in 1953 and finished in 1956, introducing international bidding processes and advanced engineering techniques that influenced future dam projects in Japan.
The annual Sakuma Dam Ryujin Festival in October allows visitors to enter the dam structure and experience local dance performances with fireworks display.
The dam generates 1.475 million kilowatts through two power stations while supplying water for agricultural and industrial purposes to surrounding communities.
The dam required the relocation of 296 households during its construction, leading to extensive compensation negotiations that established new standards for infrastructure development.
