白金AER CITY, Mixed-use development in Shirokane, Tokyo, Japan
白金AER CITY is a mixed-use complex in the Shirokane neighborhood of Tokyo, Japan, directly connected to Shirokane-Takanawa metro station. It combines a residential tower and an office building with everyday services spread across multiple floors, including a large supermarket, dining options, medical clinics, and pharmacies.
Construction began in 2002 on a former industrial site and the complex opened in 2005. The project turned an unused plot into a place that reshaped the character of the surrounding Shirokane area.
From June to July, the complex hosts the Ten'no Kawa Firefly Festival, where Genji fireflies raised by local specialists can be seen in a dedicated garden. It is one of the few places in central Tokyo where visitors can watch fireflies in an urban setting.
The complex gives direct access to both the Mita and Namboku subway lines through an entrance inside the building, making it easy to arrive and leave without going outside. Most services are on the lower floors, so a short walk through the building is usually enough to cover everything you need.
The name AER comes from the Greek word for air, wind, and breath, which is an uncommon naming choice for a building in Japan. This reference to something light and open stands in contrast with the density of the structure itself.
