Chiesa di Santa Maria di Piazza, Religious monument in Ostra Vetere, Italy.
The chiesa di Santa Maria di Piazza is a church building in Ostra Vetere featuring neo-Gothic design with Romanesque influences, marked by a brick facade and three naves divided by polystyle columns. The interior is defined by pointed arches and follows a traditional church layout with these architectural elements.
The structure was built in 1444 on the site of an earlier church and underwent several renovation phases, including a reconstruction in 1664. A comprehensive renewal took place in 1909 under architect Giovanni Gualandi.
The church houses religious artworks spanning centuries, including a wooden crucifix dating from the 16th century and a Madonna with Child painting. These pieces shape the interior and reflect the artistic treasures gathered within these walls over time.
The building is currently closed due to earthquake damage that has been in effect since October 2016. Visitors should verify accessibility before planning a visit, as entry remains restricted.
The 1909 renovation made this building one of the first churches in the area to use reinforced concrete as its primary construction material. This innovative building method was unusual for local religious architecture of that era.
