Santuario della Rocchetta, Lake Como church in Airuno
The Santuario della Rocchetta is a church building standing on a hill near Airuno at about 366 meters elevation. The structure features a vaulted interior space with a marble altar from 1754 and houses an antique wooden organ with twelve stops donated in 1862.
The sanctuary developed on the foundations of a medieval fortress, likely built in the 1300s by the Captains of Airuno. The church's first documented mention appears in 1558, and a visit by San Carlo Borromeo in 1571 prompted restorations and baroque-style alterations that gave the building its current form.
The sanctuary is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, and this Marian devotion remains central to the site today. The chapels along the climb display scenes of Christ's passion, inviting visitors to reflect while revealing how faith has shaped community life in this place.
Access is via a paved road from the base of the hill or the Scala Santa staircase with 130 granite steps built in 1923. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and the climb is gentle enough for most visitors to manage.
Legend suggests Leonardo da Vinci was once asked to help strengthen the fortress, though the project was never completed. His drawings include a view of the valley near this site, revealing its strategic position in the landscape.
