Kanniya Hot water spring, Natural hot springs in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka
Kanniya Hot Water Spring is a natural spring complex with seven wells arranged in a square pattern, each containing warm water at different temperatures. The wells reach depths of about 3 to 4 feet and form the core feature of this geothermal site.
The site contains remains from the early Anuradhapura period, including a stupa and inscriptions from the first two centuries AD. These archaeological finds suggest the location was recognized and used since ancient times.
Hindu families gather here to perform rituals honoring their deceased relatives and marking important religious moments in their lives.
The site is easily accessible during daylight hours when water levels are adequate for visiting. Wear comfortable shoes and respect local customs, particularly if you arrive during a religious ceremony.
Despite their proximity and identical construction, each of the seven wells maintains a different water temperature. This natural phenomenon makes each well offer a slightly different experience to visitors.
