Vieškūnai hillfort

Vieškūnai hillfort is an archaeological site featuring a fortified mound with steep slopes overlooking Kaunas Lagoon. Remains of ancient defensive structures lie beneath layers of soil that researchers have excavated and studied.

A wooden fortress stood on the mound in the 14th century, serving as part of Kaunas' defense line against invaders. It worked alongside the larger stone castle to protect the surrounding region.

The site carries the memory of ancient fortifications that once protected this region and shaped how people understood defense and safety. Today, visitors encounter reminders of these structures woven into the landscape itself.

Stone stairs lead to the summit, where information panels explain the excavations and findings. Wear sturdy footwear as the ground is uneven and slopes can be steep in places.

Local stories connect the site to supernatural beings, particularly ghost dogs that have long haunted the place in folk memory. The mound's alternative name draws from these tales and reflects the region's folklore traditions.
