The wooden fortress on Vieskunai Mound served as part of Kaunas defense system against enemy attacks during the 14th century, protecting the main stone castle.
The monument at the foot of the hillfort commemorates multiple ancient fortifications that now rest beneath the waters of Kaunas Lagoon.
Stone stairs lead visitors to the summit, where information panels detail the archaeological findings and historical significance of the fortified settlement.
Local folklore connects the site to supernatural tales involving ghost dogs, which influenced its alternative name, Suneliskiai Hill, meaning 'dog hill' in Lithuanian.
