Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art, Modern art museum in Sakura, Japan
The Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art is a contemporary art museum located in Sakura that houses over 1,000 artworks within a building designed by architect Ichiro Ebihara. The structure sits within 30 hectares of natural parkland that surrounds the galleries and creates spaces for walking and reflection.
The institution opened in 1990 through the initiative of DIC Corporation, building upon contemporary art pieces collected by Katsumi Kawamura beginning in the 1970s. The founding reflected a commitment to making modern artistic expressions available to the public.
The collection brings together artworks from different periods and artistic traditions, creating a dialogue between contemporary pieces and classical masters. Visitors can experience how creative expressions evolve across time and geography while walking through the carefully designed galleries.
The museum can be reached by free shuttle buses from two nearby train stations, operating between 9:30 AM and 5:00 PM. The grounds are spacious and easy to explore on foot, so plan for a leisurely visit to see both the artworks and the natural surroundings.
The grounds contain around 200 different tree species, making the visit a combination of art appreciation and botanical discovery. This diversity changes with the seasons, offering visitors a different visual experience with each return.
